5 to try: This week’s food holidays

October 23rd, 2009, 11:56 am by Jess Harter

Heart Attack Grill

Every day seems to be some sort of holiday in the food world, from National Popcorn Day (Jan. 19) to Beans ’n’ Franks Day (July 13) to National Pfeffernüsse Day (Dec. 23). Here are some food holidays coming up in the next five days, as well as a suggestion of where to celebrate each:

Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill: Saturday is National Bologna Day, and the fried bologna sandwich ($9.99, pictured below) is one of the signature menu items at the country singer’s restaurant at Mesa Riverview. The thick-cut bologna is topped with onions, American cheese and Miracle Whip and served on grilled garlic toast. 1065 N. Dobson Road, Mesa, (480) 844-8629.

Toby Keith's I Love This Bar & GrillHeart Attack Grill: Sunday is National Greasy Foods Day, and no one revels in dietary fat and cholesterol more than this Chandler burger joint (pictured above) with “naughty nurse” servers. The Quadruple Bypass cheeseburger is made with four half-pound beef patties and 12 strips of bacon, and the Flatliner fries are deep-fried in pure lard. 6185 W. Chandler Boulevard, Chandler, (480) 205-7777.

SanTan Brewing Company: Monday is National Pretzel Day, and some of the best soft pretzels you’ll find outside a ballpark are served at this downtown Chandler brew pub. A pair of large pretzels ($6.50, or just $5 during happy hour) with or without salt come with spicy beer mustard and beer cheese for dipping. 8 S. San Marcos Place, Chandler, (480) 917-8700.

Murphy’s Law Irish Pub: Tuesday is National Potato Day, and who knows the starchy tubers better than the Irish? House-fried potatoes take the place of chips in the Irish nachos ($8.95), and eight varieties of spud sides include bacon blue mash, green chili cheddar mash, beer cheese mash and parmesan-herb mash.  58 S. San Marcos Place, Chandler, (480) 812-1588.

Romeo’s Euro Cafe: Wednesday is National Chocolate Day, and this Gilbert eatery has the most decadent dessert case in the East Valley. Specialty cakes include the Intoxicated Love, made with dark, milk and white chocolates, and Dark Desire, hazelnut-chocolate cake with dark chocolate mousse and chocolate ganache (both $6 per slice). 207 N. Gilbert Road, Gilbert, (480) 962-4224.

5 to try: Restaurants for dads

June 18th, 2009, 7:10 am by Jess Harter

Dads come in all shapes, sizes and types. While it’s unfair to paint all dads with the same brush — for example, while I’m sure most enjoy a good steak, there undoubtedly are some vegans out there — I think it’s safe to say many dads share certain hobbies and passions.

So at the risk of perpetuating some stereotypes, here are five East Valley restaurants that should appeal to your dad — if he fits into one of these common categories:

Toby Keith's I Love This Bar & GrillCountry music fan: If your dad’s idea of rap music is Cowboy Troy, he’ll fit right in at Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill. The famous country singer’s super-sized restaurant and honky tonk at Mesa Riverview offers a trailer load of comfort foods, such as chicken fried steak, fried catfish, fried bologna sandwiches and deep-fried Twinkies. 1065 N. Dobson Road, Mesa, (480) 844-8629.

Trophy's SteakhouseBig-game hunter: All 29 species of big-game animals found in North America — from bison to polar bear to musk ox — are on display in the museum-like dining room of Trophy’s Steakhouse. Besides traditional beef steaks, this recently opened Queen Creek restaurant dishes up such wild game as elk, buffalo and antelope. 7215 S. Power Road, Queen Creek, (480) 840-3981.

SanTan Brewing Co.Beer drinker: If the closest thing to a vegetable your dad regularly eats is hops and barley, he’s sure to find a beer to his liking at SanTan Brewing Company. The downtown Chandler microbrewery makes seven different beers that complement a menu of traditional pub grub, such as burgers, sandwiches, wings and pizzas. 8 S. San Marcos Place, Chandler, (480) 917-8700.

Don & Charlie'sSports fan: Besides great steaks and ribs, Don & Charlie’s has one of the best sports memorabilia collections this side of Cooperstown. The entryway is lined with 800 autographed baseballs, autographed NFL and NBA jerseys hang in the bar and the dining room’s walls are covered with autographed photos and magazine covers. 7501 E. Camelback Road, Scottsdale, (480) 990-0900.

Cadillac RanchCar lover: Whether your dad is a weekend mechanic or weekend roadtripper, he’ll feel at home at Cadillac Ranch, a Tempe Marketplace roadhouse where the auto-fixation runs from the Cadillac mounted above its entry to the ceiling covered with license plates. The menu emphasizes burgers, steaks and ribs. 2000 E. Rio Salado Parkway, Tempe, (480) 894-1111.

First Taste: Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill

May 12th, 2009, 5:00 pm by Jess Harter

Toby Keith's I Love This Bar & Grill

Toby Keith isn’t who you probably think he is. And, more than likely, neither is his new restaurant, Toby’s Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill, at Mesa Riverview.

The former oil-field-worker-turned-semi-pro-football-player-turned-country-music-superstar is a favorite of Red State America, thanks in great part to his enthusiastic 2004 support of President Bush and his ultra-patriotic songs like “Courtesy of the Red, White & Blue (The Angry American).”

But, as Keith readily admits, he’s long been a registered Democrat, one who thinks this country should never have gone to war in Iraq.

Similarly, it’s easy to scan the menu, backed by embroidered saddle leather, at I Love This Bar & Grill, named for Keith’s 2003 hit song, and draw certain conclusions based on its fried bologna sandwiches, deep-fried macaroni and cheese and deep-fried Twinkies (pictured below).

Toby Keith's I Love This Bar & GrillDig a little deeper, though, and there’s more to his 20,000-square-foot establishment than first meets the eye. That’s understandable: It’s hard to take in all at once.

Able to accommodate nearly 700 people, ILTB&G has to be the biggest restaurant in Mesa. An 85-foot-long island bar, shaped like a guitar and manned by a half-dozen bartenders, dominates the center of the space.

At one end of the building is the main dining area with faux-snakeskin booths and four-top tables with branded wood chairs; at the other end, a large stage looks out on a railed-off dance floor.

There are a lot of other attractions in between, including a glass-enclosed VIP room with private bar, two private dining rooms that look like large garden sheds and a mechanical bull appropriately named “Toby.”

And to mark the occasion of your visit, a spacious gift shop sells not only shirts and hats, but all other things Toby, such as belt buckles, playing cards and sets of album-themed shot glasses.

Most, if not all, the hostesses and servers seem to be friendly young women clad in short denim skirts or Daisy Dukes, toting 32-ounce draft beers in Mason jars.

Toby Keith's I Love This Bar & GrillIt’s easy to see why ILTB&G already is drawing huge crowds on weekends. Over-sized, country-themed bars (like the recently opened Cadillac Ranch in Tempe and Saddle Ranch Chophouse in Scottsdale) are very popular right now with the 20- and 30-something nightlifers.

As for the food at ILTB&G, I’ve only tried a handful of dishes.

The “She’s a Hottie” Hatch chile burger is flame-grilled with a nice smoky flavor. It comes, of course, with “Freedom Fries.” On one visit, the fries had a nice, garlicky taste; on another occasion, they were just plain.

I wasn’t impressed with the Toby’s Platter ($12.99), a guitar-shaped wire basket of mostly flavorless starters, including the aforementioned man ‘n’ cheese balls, non-breaded chicken wings, jalapeno poppers, nachos and fried mozzarella sticks.

And the three sauces provided – barbecue, Southwest ranch and blue cheese (which seemed more like mayo) – didn’t seem to complement any of the items.

On the other hand, I did like the signature pulled pork sandwich topped with creamy cole slaw ($8.99). And I was surprised to discover I really liked  the fried bologna sandwich ($9.99, pictured above), made with a half-inch-thick slab of meat, Miracle Whip and American cheese on garlic toast.

I’ll be back to try some of the comfort-food entrees, like chicken fried steak ($12.99), catfish ($11.99) or barbecued ribs ($12.99-$18.99).

I’m guessing Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill isn’t going to appeal to certain people no matter what. But try it for yourself before passing judgment.

The next time Keith sings, “How do you like me now?” the answer just might surprise you.

Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill opens in Mesa

Toby Keith's I Love This Bar & Grill

Fried bologna sandwich, anyone?

Country music star Toby Keith, who scored a 2003 hit with “I Love This Bar,” has opened his long-awaited Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill at Mesa Riverview.

The restaurant, which was announced more than a year ago, is huge — 20,000 square feet of rough wood, corrugated steel and polished concrete. The centerpiece is an 85-foot island bar shaped like a guitar.

There’s also a glass-enclosed VIP lounge with private bar, two private dining rooms that look like sheds (pictured), a dance floor, a store selling Keith’s CDs and clothing and, of course, a mechanical bull.

Toby Keith's I Love This Bar & GrillThe country-themed menu, backed by embroidered saddle leather, offers burgers ($7.99-$12.99), sandwiches ($8.99-$10.99) and entrees ($10.99-
$22.99), including:

• A fried bologna sandwich with Miracle Whip dressing on garlic toast ($9.99);

• A “4×4” bacon cheeseburger, with four strips of bacon and four slices of cheese ($8.99);

• Deep-fried Twinkies with whipped cream and strawberries (two for $4.99, pictured below); and

• Draft beer served in 32-ounce Mason jars ($6.25).

Toby Keith's I Love This Bar & GrillOf course, all these pale in comparison to the “Arizona 100-Ounce Challenge,” a 32-ounce beef patty, 4 ounces of cheese and 6 ounces of “fixin’s” on a 10-ounce bun, along with 16 ounces of “Freedom fries” and a 32-ounce beverage.

The challenge, which costs $29.99, already has been attempted twice in the restaurant’s first few days. Both were unsuccessful.

Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill, 1065 N. Dobson Road, Mesa, is open 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. weekdays and 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. weekends. Info: (480) 844-8629 or tobykeithusa.com.
