5 to try: This week’s food holidays

October 23rd, 2009, 11:56 am by Jess Harter

Heart Attack Grill

Every day seems to be some sort of holiday in the food world, from National Popcorn Day (Jan. 19) to Beans ’n’ Franks Day (July 13) to National Pfeffernüsse Day (Dec. 23). Here are some food holidays coming up in the next five days, as well as a suggestion of where to celebrate each:

Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill: Saturday is National Bologna Day, and the fried bologna sandwich ($9.99, pictured below) is one of the signature menu items at the country singer’s restaurant at Mesa Riverview. The thick-cut bologna is topped with onions, American cheese and Miracle Whip and served on grilled garlic toast. 1065 N. Dobson Road, Mesa, (480) 844-8629.

Toby Keith's I Love This Bar & GrillHeart Attack Grill: Sunday is National Greasy Foods Day, and no one revels in dietary fat and cholesterol more than this Chandler burger joint (pictured above) with “naughty nurse” servers. The Quadruple Bypass cheeseburger is made with four half-pound beef patties and 12 strips of bacon, and the Flatliner fries are deep-fried in pure lard. 6185 W. Chandler Boulevard, Chandler, (480) 205-7777.

SanTan Brewing Company: Monday is National Pretzel Day, and some of the best soft pretzels you’ll find outside a ballpark are served at this downtown Chandler brew pub. A pair of large pretzels ($6.50, or just $5 during happy hour) with or without salt come with spicy beer mustard and beer cheese for dipping. 8 S. San Marcos Place, Chandler, (480) 917-8700.

Murphy’s Law Irish Pub: Tuesday is National Potato Day, and who knows the starchy tubers better than the Irish? House-fried potatoes take the place of chips in the Irish nachos ($8.95), and eight varieties of spud sides include bacon blue mash, green chili cheddar mash, beer cheese mash and parmesan-herb mash.  58 S. San Marcos Place, Chandler, (480) 812-1588.

Romeo’s Euro Cafe: Wednesday is National Chocolate Day, and this Gilbert eatery has the most decadent dessert case in the East Valley. Specialty cakes include the Intoxicated Love, made with dark, milk and white chocolates, and Dark Desire, hazelnut-chocolate cake with dark chocolate mousse and chocolate ganache (both $6 per slice). 207 N. Gilbert Road, Gilbert, (480) 962-4224.

SanTan Brewing ales now available at restaurants

July 14th, 2009, 3:32 pm by Jess Harter

You no longer have to trek to downtown Chandler to enjoy one of SanTan Brewing Company’s ales. The city’s only independent microbrewery has begun making its beers available to other Valley restaurants and bars.

“The intention is to drive business back to the pub,” says brewmaster Anthony Canecchia, who opened SanTan in September 2007.

SanTan BrewingSanTan is the only Arizona brewery that self-distributes its beers. The few other available local beers, such those from Four Peaks or Sonoran, are among many brands handled by large distribution companies.

Canecchia, on the other hand, purchased his own delivery truck and is starting with just two dozen accounts across the East Valley and Phoenix, ranging from fine-dining restaurants like Cork to wine bars like Down Under to steakhouses like Trophy’s.

“I want to create personal relationships with these places that will have us on tap,” he says, reflecting his philosophy of supporting and promoting local businesses.

SanTan staffers will visit the restaurants and bars for promotions and giveaways.

Eye-catching tap handles in bright colors identify the pub’s seven signature ales: Sunspot Gold, Hefeweizen, Big Red, Sun Devil, Gordo Stout, Hopshock IPA and Strawberry Wit.

Canecchia leased a refrigerated, 600-square-foot storage space in May and began brewing every day, storing the extra beer that wasn’t needed for his popular pub.

“We’re able to do it (distribute) right now because we’ve built up an inventory,” he says.

To service more than two dozen accounts, though, Canecchia is planning to get more holding tanks, which also might enable the opening of other SanTan locations.

SanTan Brewing Co.In the meantime, SanTan also is publicizing its brand by teaming up with other Chandler restaurants and stores for events, including:

• A SanTan beer class taught by Canecchia 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Thursday at Whole Foods in Chandler. Cost is $5. RSVP: (480) 821-9447 or e-mail sp.chr.marketing@wholefoods.com.

• A four-course dinner with SanTan beer pairings at 7:30 p.m. July 23 at Whole Foods. Cost: $35. RSVP: (480) 821-9447 or e-mail sp.chr.marketing@wholefoods.com.

• A five-course dinner with SanTan beer pairings at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 17 at Cork in Chandler. Price TBA. RSVP: (480) 883-3773 or e-mail info@corkrestaurant.net.

SanTan also holds its own Tuesday Night Tastings, featuring a four-course menu with beer pairings, the first Tuesday of every month. The next one is Aug. 4. Cost: $25.

5 to try: Restaurants for dads

June 18th, 2009, 7:10 am by Jess Harter

Dads come in all shapes, sizes and types. While it’s unfair to paint all dads with the same brush — for example, while I’m sure most enjoy a good steak, there undoubtedly are some vegans out there — I think it’s safe to say many dads share certain hobbies and passions.

So at the risk of perpetuating some stereotypes, here are five East Valley restaurants that should appeal to your dad — if he fits into one of these common categories:

Toby Keith's I Love This Bar & GrillCountry music fan: If your dad’s idea of rap music is Cowboy Troy, he’ll fit right in at Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill. The famous country singer’s super-sized restaurant and honky tonk at Mesa Riverview offers a trailer load of comfort foods, such as chicken fried steak, fried catfish, fried bologna sandwiches and deep-fried Twinkies. 1065 N. Dobson Road, Mesa, (480) 844-8629.

Trophy's SteakhouseBig-game hunter: All 29 species of big-game animals found in North America — from bison to polar bear to musk ox — are on display in the museum-like dining room of Trophy’s Steakhouse. Besides traditional beef steaks, this recently opened Queen Creek restaurant dishes up such wild game as elk, buffalo and antelope. 7215 S. Power Road, Queen Creek, (480) 840-3981.

SanTan Brewing Co.Beer drinker: If the closest thing to a vegetable your dad regularly eats is hops and barley, he’s sure to find a beer to his liking at SanTan Brewing Company. The downtown Chandler microbrewery makes seven different beers that complement a menu of traditional pub grub, such as burgers, sandwiches, wings and pizzas. 8 S. San Marcos Place, Chandler, (480) 917-8700.

Don & Charlie'sSports fan: Besides great steaks and ribs, Don & Charlie’s has one of the best sports memorabilia collections this side of Cooperstown. The entryway is lined with 800 autographed baseballs, autographed NFL and NBA jerseys hang in the bar and the dining room’s walls are covered with autographed photos and magazine covers. 7501 E. Camelback Road, Scottsdale, (480) 990-0900.

Cadillac RanchCar lover: Whether your dad is a weekend mechanic or weekend roadtripper, he’ll feel at home at Cadillac Ranch, a Tempe Marketplace roadhouse where the auto-fixation runs from the Cadillac mounted above its entry to the ceiling covered with license plates. The menu emphasizes burgers, steaks and ribs. 2000 E. Rio Salado Parkway, Tempe, (480) 894-1111.

Photos: Tuesday Night Tasting at SanTan Brewing

June 3rd, 2009, 9:08 pm by Jess Harter

SanTan Brewing Co.

Last night’s monthly Tuesday Night Tasting at SanTan Brewing Company drew the largest crowd yet — nearly 60 people — who enjoyed a four-course meal with beer pairings for just $20. At the rate this five-month-old event is taking off (I was told the tasting sold out in just a day), the downtown Chandler brewpub eventually may have to devote its entire dining area to future TNTs.

This month’s theme was British food. The four courses:

SanTan Brewing Co.

• A Scotch egg, a hard-boiled egg encased in sausage, covered with breadcrumbs, deep-fried and served cold with a Dijon Hollandaise (top left), paired with SanTan’s current seasonal, an English-style pale ale called Summer Comfort;

• Yorkshire pudding with mutton cooked in a red curry sauce (top right), paired with Maibock, a smooth and nutty bock beer from guest brewer Dieter Foerstner of Tempe’s Gordon Biersch;

• A”Yankee” pasty, a puff pastry filled with sweet potato and lamb sausage with a delicious shallot-and-lavender gravy (bottom left), paired with Bass Original Pale Ale;

Cathy’s Rum Cake with English Toffee glaze (bottom right), paired with SanTan’s Gordo stout.

SanTan Brewing Co.

As a surprise, SanTan owner/brewmaster Anthony Canecchia concluded the evening by giving attendees a half-pint preview of his next seasonal, Strawberry Wit. Look for this sweet, fruity ale to be unveiled later this month.

From beginning to end, I thought this was SanTan’s best TNT to date. My favorite dish was the “Yankee” pasty, especially the lavender sauce. I’d order it all the time if it was on the regular menu.

The next Tuesday Night Tasting is scheduled for July 7. Info: (480) 917-8700 or santanbrewing.com.

Photos: May’s Tuesday Night Tasting at SanTan Brewing

May 6th, 2009, 4:50 pm by Jess Harter

SanTan Brewing

The fourth installment of SanTan Brewing’s monthly Tuesday Night Tasting series drew the largest crowd yet – the downtown Chandler brew pub expanded the reservation-only event’s area to nearly 50 seats. Moving to the first Tuesday of the month, this TNT fell on Cinco de Mayo, prompting a Baja-themed menu of four dishes paired with four beers for $20.

SanTan Brewing

The courses, in order, were a very spicy shredded pork and habanero spring roll with sweet onion relish and a pepper-infused honey glaze (accompanied by Full Sail Brewing’s “Session” beer); lightly bread tiger shrimp with a mojito-lime reduction and Sriracha sauce (with SanTan’s Sunspot Gold); bacon-wrapped scallops with a Bosc pear and apple chutney (SanTan’s Sun Devil Pale Ale); and passion fruit margarita sorbet from nearby Simply Unique Gelato with berries and a lemon tuille (SanTan’s Habanero Gold).

SanTan Brewing

As always, SanTan owner/brewmaster Anthony Cannechia introduced each dish and beer and chatted with guests between courses. The next TNT (menu TBA) will be June 2. The best way to find out when SanTan begins taking reservations is to follow the brew pub on Twitter at @santanbrewing.

Photos: Hoppy beer tasting at SanTan Brewing Company

April 15th, 2009, 10:35 pm by Jess Harter

Hoppy beers were the inspiration for this month’s Tuesday Night Tasting at SanTan Brewing Company in downtown Chandler. Three dozen people enjoyed a four-course tasting menu prepared by chef Brant Gasparek with four different beer pairings Tuesday night.

Hops add bitterness, aroma and strong flavor to beer, making American pale ales and IPAs perfect for pairing with smoky or spicy foods.

SanTan Brewing Co.

This month’s guest brewmaster was Derek Osborne (pictured on left) of Chandler’s BJ’s Restaurant & Brewery. Osborne and SanTan brewmaster Anthony Canecchia (right) introduced the beers for each course and answered questions.

SanTan Brewing Co.

The first course was Landjäger, a Bavarian sausage not unlike dry salami, with the Italian blue cheese Gorgonzola. The accompanying beer was Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.

SanTan Brewing Co.

The second course was a smoky Hungarian sausage that I think was Csabai, along with Cambozola, a German creation combining Gorgonzola with a Camembert-like rind of French triple cream cheese. The beer was BJ’s Piranha Pale Ale.

SanTan Brewing Co.

The third course was a bowl of tom kha gai, a spicy Thai soup made with coconut milk, lemongrass and chicken. Fried chiles gave it a smoky flavor that paired well with SanTan’s bitter Hopshock IPA.

SanTan Brewing Co.

The last course was carrot cake with a sweet ginger frosting. You might not think a beer would complement a piece of cake, but SanTan’s Big Red Ale has a spicy/citrus hop character that went with it quite well.

Since debuting in February, SanTan’s monthly tastings — which are being moved to the first Tuesday of each month, making the next one May 5 — are proving to be very popular. Even though the price of April’s event was raised from $10 to $20 (still a great price for four courses and four beers), it filled up in two days and there was a waiting list several pages long.

So if you want to attend the May 5 tasting, which starts at 6:30 p.m., you’ll probably need to make your reservation as soon as the menu is announced next week. Info: (480) 917-8700.

SanTan Brewing introduces WallyToffee

February 18th, 2009, 11:31 pm by Jess Harter

The bad news: The last pint of SanTan Brewing Company’s wonderful Winter Warmer is likely gone by the time you read this.

The good news: The downtown Chandler brew pub has unveiled its new seasonal beer — WallyToffee — and it’s another winner.

Similar to an English brown ale, WallyToffee (pictured) is a dark amber ale with hints of toasted nuts and caramel. The sweet malt character makes it remarkably smooth with no bitterness.

Owner and brewmaster Anthony Canecchia was aiming for somewhere between 5 percent and 5.5 percent alcohol, “but it ended up being about 6 percent,” he says.

Canecchia says WallyToffee, which sells for $4.75 per pint, will be available for about a month, depending on how quickly SanTan customers consume the 30-keg batch.

Winter Warmer, a holidays-themed dark ale made with ginger and honey, will return in November, he says.

In addition to a seasonal beer, SanTan offers five signature “everyday” beers: Sunspot Gold, Big Red, HopShock IPA, HefeWeizen and Gordo Stout.

The brew pub’s lunch and dinner menu features a variety of salads, burgers, sandwiches, pizzas and entrees.
