Dirty dining: Roaches at Flaming Kabob, Four Seasons Sushi

October 27th, 2009, 10:25 am by Jess Harter

The five-second rule apparently is in effect at Flaming Kabob, which tied for top dishonors on this week’s list of worst East Valley restaurant health inspections.

The restaurant, 2252 E. Baseline Road, Mesa, was flagged for seven major violations, including this doozy: “Staff noted dropping bread, picking up bread from floor with bare hand (and) proceeding to assemble sandwiches.”

If they do this in front of a county inspector, it makes me wonder what happens when an inspector isn’t watching.

Other violations included not washing those sandwich-making bare hands, “heavy organic buildup” on soda fountain and a soiled lid on ice machine. Oh, yeah — and a live cockroach found in the food-prep area.

No better was Four Seasons Sushi, 1652 N. Higley Road, Gilbert, whose seven major violations included the staff making sushi rolls with bare hands and improperly stored raw fish dripping on salad ingredients. Oh, yeah — and a live cockroach found in the food-prep area.

Other top offenders this week are Abuelita’s Kitchen and Club Cabo in Mesa and China Garden in Gilbert (five violations each).

Dirty dining: Fitness Cafe not so healthy?

October 6th, 2009, 12:54 pm by Jess Harter

Talk about irony: Fitness Café, which caters to a health-conscious crowd in north Scottsdale, tops this week’s list of worst restaurant inspections in the East Valley.

The café, 13610 N. Scottsdale Road, was cited for seven major violations, ranging from “soiled wiping cloths stored on cutting boards” to poor (or non-existent) hand-washing by managers and staff.

Several other restaurants were tagged with five major violations this week, including Prima Pizza and Floridino’s in Gilbert, Rancho Grande Market in Mesa, Crackers Café in Tempe and Macayo’s and Cheuvront Wine & Cheese Bar in Phoenix.

Dirty dining: Queen Creek Cafe nailed for 11 violations

October 1st, 2009, 3:11 pm by Jess Harter

Queen Creek isn’t known as a dining destination, and this isn’t going to help its image: One of the town’s longtime institutions, the Queen Creek Café, is the Valley’s worst offender in the latest round of Maricopa County restaurant inspections.

A routine inspection of the café, 22002 S. Ellsworth, on Sept. 11 resulted in 11 major violations. The inspector noted:

• “Walls, floors, ceilings & shelving in the kitchen & walk-in units are heavily soiled with food debris, grease/oil buildup, etc.”

• “Various containers of gravy, cooked beef and chicken and prepared over 24 to 48 hours ago not date marked.”

• “Metal container of chicken salad in the wait station upright reach-in cooler found with a date mark of 9-1-09.”

• Only “15 out of 27 food service workers have obtained food handler cards.”

Other East Valley dishonors for the week go to Red Dragon in Chandler and Golden Egg Roll in Tempe (7 major violations apiece), La Parilla Suiza in Mesa (6), and Café Michelle in Mesa, Chompies Deli in Scottsdale and Dunkin Donuts in Ahwatukee (5 apiece).
