March 9th, 2009, 7:27 am by Jess Harter

Irish rockers U2 have announced a worldwide stadium tour, which will include a show in the Valley this fall.

The group, which just released its latest album, “No Line on the Horizon,” will start its “U2 360″ tour in Europe in June, before coming to North America in September.

Four North American shows have been announced: Chicago, New York, Boston and Toronto. The band’s website says additional shows soon will added for Phoenix, Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta and several other cities.

Several U2 fan sites (such as this one) are reporting the Valley concert will be Oct. 20 at University of Phoenix Stadium, and tickets will go on sale April 20.

A Live Nation official says tickets will range from $30 to $250.

Taylor Swift: May 21 at Jobing.com Arena

February 23rd, 2009, 8:00 am by Jess Harter

Taylor Swift — the 19-year-old country-pop star who’s had more hits in the past two years than most artists have in a lifetime — will perform May 21 at Jobing.com Arena. Tickets, which are $20 to $49.50, go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Swift’s first headlining tour promises to be one of the Valley’s biggest music events of 2009. Her two albums, “Fearless” and “Taylor Swift,” were the No. 3 and No. 6 bestsellers of 2008, making her the year’s top-selling artist.

Her self-titled 2006 debut featured five Top 10 singles, including “Our Song,” “Picture to Burn” and “Should’ve Said No.” Released in November, “Fearless” already has produced two more, “Love Story” and “White Horse.”

“Fearless” has spent nine weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The last album to achieve the feat was Santana’s “Supernatural” in 1999-2000.

“American Idol” alum Kellie Pickler and Nashville foursome Gloriana will open for Swift on her 52-city tour, which kicks off April 23 in Evansville, Ind. According to Swift’s publicist, the shows will feature “multiple costume changes” and a stage with a “fairy-tale castle.”

In 7th year, Tempe Music Festival continues to grow

February 14th, 2009, 10:20 pm by Jess Harter

Since 2003, Ken Koziol has painstakingly nurtured his Tempe Music Festival. Contending with challenges ranging from inclement weather to fickle musical tastes, he’s watched the event grow from a simple idea into a high-profile annual attraction.

And, despite the economic recession, he’s hoping to enlarge it even more this year.

The two-day festival will take place April 3-4 at Tempe Beach Park. Headliners include Kid Rock, The All-American Rejects and 3 Doors Down (pictured above performing at halftime of last month’s Cardinals-Falcons NFL playoff game).

“This is the most impressive lineup we’ve ever had in terms of charted hits,” Koziol says.

Last year’s festival drew about 16,000 people. The Friday lineup, which was anchored by My Chemical Romance, drew a larger crowd than the previous year, but Saturday’s attendance was down.

Fergie was very slow,” Koziol says. “She’s a radio darling — we got a ton of buzz about her appearance — but in terms of hard ticket sales she’s not there yet.”

This year, Koziol is promising a high-energy Friday night with Kid Rock (pictured at right at last week’s Grammy Awards), Cowboy Mouth and Valley favorites Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers.

The Outlaws, Mutemath, Shiny Toy Guns and Tom Morello will play with The All-American Rejects and 3 Doors Down on Saturday. One more act is expected to be announced.

“The economy notwithstanding, I feel better about our chances this year,” Koziol says.

To spur ticket sales, the festival is offering several thousand one-day tickets for just $25. After they’re gone, tickets will be $35 in advance and $45 on the day of show — the same price as last year.

The festival, which has been held on the south shore of Tempe Town Lake just west of Mill Avenue, also is growing physically.

Red Bull will set up what Koziol calls “a floating skate park” — featuring 20 nationally recognized wakeboarders as well as some local standouts — as the festival’s footprint expands to the east side of Mill.

A “Corona Cove,” which includes a beer garden and activities like beach volleyball, will be set up in the area between the northbound and southbound Mill bridges.

The Tempe Music Festival annually has been held in conjunction with downtown Tempe’s Spring Festival of the Arts. This year, the events have been separated.

Koziol moved the music festival back one week, putting it on the same weekend as this year’s Country Thunder festival just south of the Valley near Florence. The latter had been held in late April.

“Ironically, we’ve both moved our festivals simultaneously,” he says.

In addition, Bruce Springsteen announced a concert that Friday at Jobing.com Arena in Glendale.

“We actually toyed with the idea of getting Springsteen to play our festival instead,” Koziol says. “Unfortunately, we don’t have the deep pockets of a Coachella.”

Still, the organizer remains optimistic about this year.

“The Valley has, what, three or four million people?” he says. “You’d think we could each pull 20,000.”

While Koziol admits he lost a couple sponsors from last year, the festival’s biggest supporters, such as Circle K and Budweiser, have continued their support.

“In order for a festival to work, you need a good sponsorship base,” he says. “To flip the lights on at someplace like Jobing.com is a lot easier than setting up a two-day event at Tempe Beach Park.”

Tempe Music Festival
When: 5 p.m. to midnight April 3 and noon to midnight April 4.
Where: Tempe Beach Park, 54 W. Rio Salado Parkway.
How much: $25 early-bird tickets, $35 advance, $45 day of show.
Info: (480) 970-3378 or tempemusicfestival.com.

Tom Morello, aka The Nightwatchman, added to Tempe fest

February 13th, 2009, 12:37 pm by Jess Harter

Grammy-winning guitarist Tom Morello is the latest addition to this year’s Tempe Music Festival, which will be held April 3-4 at Tempe Beach Park.

Morello, who’s played with Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave, was named the 26th-best guitarist of all time by Rolling Stone in 2003.

Since 2003, Morello has been performing politically-tinged folk music under the alias The Nightwatchman.

Morello will be added to the Tempe festival’s Saturday lineup, which also features Mutemath, Shiny Toy Guns, The All-American Rejects and 3 Doors Down.

One more act is expected to be added to Saturday’s roster.

Friday’s lineup will feature The Outlaws, Cowboy Mouth, Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers and Kid Rock.

Festival tickets went on sale this morning. Several thousand early-bird tickets are available for $25. After they’re gone, tickets will be $35 in advance and $45 day of show.

February 9th, 2009, 5:01 pm by Jess Harter

National and Valley hip-hop artists are banding together for a free concert called “Stop the Circus! (Fight for Tolerance, Stop Arpaio)” Tuesday night at Stray Cat Bar & Grill in Tempe.

Melissa Manchester, whose silky-smooth ballad “Midight Blue” launched a string of ’70s hits, brings her extensive song catalog to the Mesa Arts Center on Saturday.

The Bronx singer-songwriter is perhaps best-known for “Through the Eyes of Love,” the theme song from the 1978 tear-jerker flick “Ice Castles.” That same year, she also collaborated with Kenny Loggins to write “Whenever I Call You Friend,” a duet hit for Loggins and Stevie Nicks.

In 1979, Manchester was nominated for a Grammy for her version of “Don’t Cry Out Loud,” and three years later she won a Grammy for her only No. 1 hit, “You Should Hear How She Talks About You.”

The versatile performer also has branched out into TV (a recurring role on “Blossom”), movies (co-starring with Bette Midler in “For the Boys”) and stage (co-starring with Kelsey Grammar in “Sweeney Todd”).

Manchester performs 7 p.m. Saturday at the Mesa Arts Center’s Piper Repertory Theater, 1 E. Main St. Tickets are $47. Info: (480) 644-6500 or mesaartslive.com.

January 30th, 2009, 4:30 pm by Jess Harter

Finalize your Super Bowl plans yet? Kickoff is scheduled for approximately 4:20 p.m. Sunday. If you’re planning to go to a sports bar, they’re ecommending you get there around 2 p.m. to get a seat. Of course, not just sports bars are getting into the act.

• If you want to stock up on last-minute Pittburgh foods, check out Pittsburgh Willy’s in Chandler.

• Not sure what “Pittsburgh foods” are? I poked fun at some of them.

• There’s not much new in Valley movie theaters this weekend. The one to avoid is “New in Town,” starring Renée Zellweger. The review in the Tribune gives it an F, and USA Today calls it “one of the worst movies of any year.”

Jean-Claude Van Damme fans will want to catch his latest flick, “JCVD,” as part of Grindhouse Redux Friday and Saturday in Chandler.

• Cardinals fans get in to the Phoenix Zoo for half-price this weekend. And get a free burrito at Chipotle from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday.

• Saturday is your last chance to get a Flint-style coney at Joan’s Kitchen in south Scottsdale.

• If you want to do something artsy Saturday before spending the next day watching football, Mesa Contemporary Arts is unveiling two new exhibits.

• Don’t forget to set your DVR for TCM’s annual “31 Days of Oscar,” which start early Sunday morning.

‘Tim & Eric’ tour comes to Tempe on Sunday

January 15th, 2009, 2:05 pm by Jess Harter
YouTube Preview Image

Fans of Adult Swim know they’re in for a treat when the cable network’s “Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!” tour comes to Tempe’s Marquee Theatre on Sunday.

But if you’re unfamiliar with the three-year-old show, it’s hard to explain.

Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim are a pair of early 30-somethings who met as film students at Temple University. One of their earliest collaborations was a short video called “Tom Goes to the Mayor,” during which the two discuss restaurants (watch it here).

The video became the inspiration for a series of short live-action shows, which the pair packaged in a DVD and began selling on their website in 2003.

In 2004, Adult Swim - an adult-oriented network which airs late at night on the Cartoon Network - aired the shorts and asked the pair to come up with a show. The “Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!” debuted in 2007.

Three seasons later, the show has established itself as a somewhat bizarre mixture of funny songs, comedy sketches (many based on recurring characters) and fake commercials.

Along the way, Heidecker and Wareheim have attracted a diverse mix of guest stars, ranging from comedians (David Cross, Patton Oswalt) to actors (John C. Reilly, Jeff Goldblum, Rainn Wilson) to singers (John Mayer, “Weird Al” Yankovic).

The TV show’s fourth season is scheduled to begin Feb. 8.

“The Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!” with opening act DJ Douggpound, starts 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the Marquee Theatre, 730 N. Mill Ave., Tempe. $22 advance, $25 day of show. (480) 829-0607.
