2 for $20: Corleone’s in Gilbert

SanTan Cafes — the fancy name for the food court at the still-developing SanTan Village regional shopping center in Gilbert — already has the usual suspects you’d expect to find at a Valley mall.

But along with Sbarro, Panda Express and Hot Dog on a Stick, there also soon will be some first-in-Arizona restaurants, such as California sandwich shop Submarina and Greek eatery Opa Souvlaki.

corl2The biggest attraction, though, might be recently opened Corleone’s, since Philly cheesesteak fans in the southeast Valley no longer have to trek to Corleone’s locations in downtown Tempe or north Scottsdale to get their Whiz fix.

The mood: SanTan Cafes isn’t your typical mall food court. The huge steel-and-glass structure feels like an atrium. There are two-top and four-top tables with chairs — no fixed seating here — and four-foot-high walls break up the expansive space into smaller areas.

Corleone’s is located just inside the food court’s southern entrance, across from a large parking lot. Similar to Coleone’s non-mall locations, you order and pay at the counter, then take a table until your number is called.

The food: The menu includes four varieties of sandwiches made with ribeye steak, four with marinated chicken steak, three with deli meats, one with albacore tuna and one with veggies. All are available in 12-inch ($7.99) and 6-inch ($5.99) sizes.

The Philly Original “Whiz Wit” (shown above on left) is the most popular, and it’s easy to taste why. The delicious steak, thin-shaved and slightly greasy, warms the Whiz to the point of runniness. It also comes with grilled onions and is served on a soft hoagie.

The Under Boss chicken steak sandwich (shown above on right), with provolone and grilled onions, isn’t quite as juicy, but still tastes pretty good. For an extra $1.80, we turn both 6-inch sandwiches into combo meals, which include huge helpings of thick-cut french fries and drinks.

The drinks: Fountain sodas are inlcuded in the combo price.

The damage: $18.98. With a new Harkins theater right next door, we know where we’d be getting our pre-movie snacks. Popcorn — even the hot-buttered theater kind — just doesn’t compare to a good Philly cheesesteak like Corleone’s.

>> Corleone’s, 2268 E. Williams Field Road, Gilbert, is open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. (480) 812-8558.
