Southwest Shakespeare Company kicks off 2009 with a three-week run of  “Othello,” one of the Bard’s great tragedies, at the Mesa Arts Center’s Piper Repertory Theater.

The Mesa-based company’s third production of the season previews at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, then opens 7:30 p.m. Friday.

In “Othello,” the title character is a Moorish general who falls in love with Venetian aristocrat Desdemona. Othello’s manipulative ensign, Iago, is considered Shakespeare’s greatest villain.

Jared Sakren, artistic director of Southwest Shakespeare, brings in acclaimed Los Angeles actor Keith Jefferson for the title role. Jefferson’s resume includes several TV (“Jamie Foxx Show,” “The Shield”) and movie (“Buffalo Soldier”) credits.

Two other Equity actors, Richard Baird and Stephanie Dodd, are cast as Iago and Desdemona. Baird also serves as SSC’s associate artistic director.

Director’s orientation will take place 20 minutes prior to curtain. Director and actor talkbacks will be held after performances Friday, Saturday, Jan. 16, Jan. 22 and Jan. 23.

Well, I can’t say I’ve seen it yet. But I am a season subscriber, and I *can* tell you that Richard Baird is the *real* deal. His performances are like watching a young Orson Welles — just utterly mesmerizing. He alone has raised the (already lofty) game of SW Shakespeare.

Check it out! I’ll be there 1/24.
