When it’s “on like Donkey Kong,” Joe’s Farm Grill in Gilbert is “the real deal Holyfield.”
If you have no idea what that means, you’re obviously not a fan of the Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” a weekly show hosted by flamboyant restaurateur Guy Fieri (pictured at right).
Fieri, known for his spiky platinum blonde hair, flashy jewelry and slang expressions, travels around the country looking for the best greasy spoon spots.
This weekend, he’ll be parking his trademark Chevrolet Camaro at Joe’s Farm Grill, located on Ray Road just west of Higley Road.
The retro-looking burger stand, which opened in November 2006, is a converted farm home where owner Joe Johnston grew up. The surrounding 12-acre urban farm provides fresh produce for its burgers, sandwiches and pizzas.
Johnston says a television crew will be documenting food preparation and interviewing customers on Friday. Filming will continue Monday, when Fieri is scheduled to show up at lunch.
“This is great publicity because it’s national TV,” says Johnston, who also owns Joe’s Real BBQ in downtown Gilbert.
The show, whose air date has not been set, will focus on five of Joe’s Farm Grill’s signature items: the grilled wedge salad, ahi tuna burger, BBQ bacon blue burger, onion rings and date shake.
The restaurant will be open as usual — 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. — both days and serving its full menu.
“If anyone wants to come out, the more the merrier,” Johnston says.
